What Makes a Great International Women’s Day Campaign?

This month, like every other Women’s History Month, we are surrounded by marketing campaigns celebrating women and spreading awareness for gender equality.

Although most are truly inspiring to see, thoughtful and smart – sometimes we can’t help but physically recoil at insensitive social media posts and campaigns that are clearly published just to jump on a trend for engagement, sales and likes.

Now that we’ve addressed that, we want to focus on International Women’s Day from a marketing perspective. International Women’s Day is a powerful opportunity for brands to advocate for gender equality and build a stronger connection with their audience.

So how do you create a campaign that truly resonates with your audience? Read our tips for creating a successful International Women’s Day campaign:

Be different, be authentic

From experience, we know that companies hesitate to be daring with their International Women’s Day messaging, worried about offending people and instead go for a very generic and low-risks “Happy Women’s Day” kind of messaging.

Be bold, stand out and focus on creating a powerful message that will not only differentiate you from your competitors but will also build your relationship with your followers. Take inspiration from your audience, your employees, and your co-workers.

International Women’s Day isn’t about sales

Pro tip: it’s not the time to push for sales.

International Women’s Day campaigns should not be sales-driven. This month, it’s an opportunity for your brand to demonstrate you are supportive of gender equality and are socially conscious.

This, in return, will establish trust with your viewers and pay off long-term in brand loyalty, reputation and eventually even sales. By communicating your brand’s stance on women’s empowerment, you will also attract and reach new broader audiences of like-minded individuals.

Powerful real stories

Think of the women around you, the women you work with and showcase their powerful stories. International Women’s Day campaigns are the perfect chance to give voice to women who overcame barriers and stereotypes and allow them to share their experiences and successes.

These stories will resonate with your audience on an emotional level and humanise your brand, making it relatable and genuine.

What NOT to do

And lastly, silence isn’t an option. Pretending that #InternationalWomensDay doesn’t exist comes across as tone-deaf, to say the least.

Just this week, Apple removed International Women’s Day from their calendar app. We feel that this was an insensitive move that pursues to erase women’s visibility rather than promoting inclusivity.

So: add it to your calendar: Saturday, March 8th is International Women’s Day. Join us in celebrating women’s strength, independence and equality.
