We were approached recently by Norsound, an acoustic door seal company based in the North East following a dramatic drop in their website rankings. Their rankings had slipped and they were no longer featured for any of their key terms and traffic had fallen off almost completely to their website.
Instinctive thoughts were that a Google Penalty must be to blame – was it their link profile or was it their content? However, further investigation showed that neither of these issues were apparent.
So what else could have happened, was it something more sinister? The answer was in fact much simpler and in fact a problem that many companies run into. Something that was supposed to help the company and improve their image, was in fact the cause, the launch of their new website and the transferal to a new domain. When launching a new site on the same domain, it is essential that a re-direct map is drawn out to ensure that every link which is indexed in Google points to a new page on the new domain. This ensures that no link equity is lost from the old website to new. This process is essential on the same domain, but on a new domain it’s critical. Transferring an existing website to a new domain with no re-directs, is effectively the same as launching a brand new website with no history as it has no authority from any inbound links. In addition to re-mapping and re-gaining the link equity from the old domain, we have worked alongside their in house team to perform an SEO site overhaul in terms of structure, technical setup and optimised the content to ensure the site performs to its full potential. As a result, Norsound have now regained page one rankings for each of their key terms and seen their traffic increase back up towards the levels they were previously at.
