National Rail LogoPodium has delivered the successful re-launch of train ticket sales website nationalrail.com, securing large revenue increases in its first two months.

The nationalrail.com website has been owned and operated by Chester-le-Track Ltd for over ten years, but operated with an outdated site that had limited earning potential.

Podium supplied a complete rebrand for the site, along with technical SEO work, ongoing news and blog content, a social media presence and on-site advertising to create an additional revenue stream.

The site, built by Union Room – now cleaner-looking, fully responsive and totally focused on selling tickets via partner organisation thetrainline.com – has now already delivered hugely increased revenues since re-launching at the start of December.

The first month, December, saw a 53 per cent year-on-year increase in ticket revenue on the site; in January 2015, there was a 69 per cent year-on-year increase. It is expected that revenues will increase further as the SEO campaign develops.

The success has been built on Podium’s three-tiered strategic platform of:

Technical SEO – ensuring the ‘hidden’ elements of the website are operating perfectly in order to improve search engine rankings. There are no shortcuts – every single page on a website needs to be optimised in line with the latest Google requirements.

Content generation – blog posts, news items and travel updates uploaded at least once a week. This keeps the content fresh, ensures the site looks vibrant and aids with Google rankings/SEO.

Content promotion – in this case, social media, using Facebook and Twitter to engage with audiences and promote the website and its content.
