Let’s talk about LinkedIn.
For some people, it’s their favourite place to share industry insights, celebrate career wins and build their personal brand. For others, it’s somewhere they have a little scroll, like a few posts and quietly disappear again.
And you know what? Both are completely fine.
You don’t need to become a LinkedIn influencer to have a good presence. You don’t have to post every day or share your entire professional life online. There are plenty of ways to show up, you just need to find what works for you.
We like to think of it as a little LinkedIn ladder: the Supporter, the Engager and the Advocate.
1. The Supporter: Start Small
The Supporter might not be creating content just yet, but they’re still making an impact.
Keeping your profile up to date, following relevant people and businesses, liking useful posts and celebrating colleagues are all great ways to stay active and connected.
Even 10–15 minutes a week can make a difference.
Think of it as your little LinkedIn tidy-up. Have a quick scroll, give a few posts a like and congratulate a colleague on their latest achievement.
If posting feels like a hard no right now, don’t worry. You can build your presence without creating a single post.
2. The Engager: Join the Conversation
Ready to get a little more involved? Hello, Engager.
This is where you start joining the conversation. Leave a thoughtful comment, share an interesting article or add your perspective to someone else’s post.
You don’t need to write an essay every time. One or two genuine comments a week is a lovely place to start.
It’s a simple way to increase your visibility, build relationships and let people get to know your expertise, without the pressure of creating your own content just yet.
Think of it as building confidence, one conversation at a time.
3. The Advocate: Share Your Voice
And then we have the Advocate.
This is where you’re ready to share your own ideas and build visibility for yourself or your business.
You could share an industry insight, talk about something you’ve learned, answer a common customer question or offer your perspective on what’s happening in your sector.
And before you panic, you do not need to post every day!
One original post every week or two is a perfectly good starting point. The goal isn’t to become the next LinkedIn superstar. It’s to share something useful, show a little personality and give people a reason to remember you.
Ready to Level Up?
Think of LinkedIn a little like Couch to 5K. You wouldn’t put on your trainers for the first time and immediately sprint five kilometres. You’d start with a walk, build your confidence and gradually do a little more.
LinkedIn is the same.
Maybe you’re happily in your Supporter era. Perhaps you’re ready for your Engager era. Or maybe it’s time to step into your Advocate era.
There’s no wrong place to start. Find what works for you, take one small step and build from there.
